The Ultimate 8-Day Meghalaya Road Trip: Waterfalls, Root Bridges, and Crystal Clear Rivers

If you are craving a getaway that feels like stepping into a fantasy movie, Meghalaya should be at the very top of your bucket list. Known as the "Abode of Clouds," this northeastern paradise is packed with plunging waterfalls, mysterious caves, and forests that literally feel alive.

Whether you are an adrenaline junkie or just someone looking to escape the city noise, this 8-day Meghalaya itinerary has a little bit of everything. From the café culture of Shillong to the crystal-clear waters of Dawki, here is your day-by-day guide to the ultimate Meghalaya road trip!

Day 1: Hello, Meghalaya! (Guwahati to Shillong)

Your adventure kicks off the moment you land in Guwahati (or Shillong). The drive up to Shillong is incredibly scenic. Make sure you grab a window seat!

Halfway there, we make a pitstop at the massive Umiam Lake (also known as Barapani). With its blue waters surrounded by pine-covered hills, you’ll immediately see why they call this area the "Scotland of the East." In the afternoon, dive into the local culture at the Don Bosco Museum. By evening, drop your bags at the hotel and take a casual stroll through Police Bazar—grab some local street food, do a little shopping, and soak in the chilly Shillong vibe.

Day 2: Into the Wild (Shillong to Mawlynbana)

Say goodbye to the city traffic because today we head into nature. Our first stop is the ancient Mawphlang Sacred Forest. The locals believe this forest is protected by a local deity, and the rule is simple: you cannot take anything out of the forest, not even a dead leaf!

After soaking in those mystical vibes, we drive to Mawlynbana. Get ready to squeeze through the famous Split Rock and enjoy some refreshing river trekking. We end the day chilling by the peaceful Mawlynbana Lake before tucking in for the night in this quiet village.

Day 3: Chasing Waterfalls & Caves (Mawlynbana to Cherrapunjee)

Today is all about epic views. On the way to Cherrapunjee (locally known as Sohra), we stop at the Mawkdok Dympep Valley Viewpoint for some postcard-worthy photos.

Cherrapunjee is famous for two things: waterfalls and caves. Get your flashlights ready as we explore the fossil-filled walls of the Arwah Cave and the impressive limestone formations of Mawsmai Cave. Afterward, we visit the towering Nohkalikai Waterfalls (India's tallest plunge waterfall) and the absolutely magical, three-tiered Wei Sawdong Waterfalls.

Day 4: The Ultimate Trek (Nongriat Living Root Bridges)

Eat a heavy breakfast because today is leg day! We are trekking deep into the lush, tropical forests of Nongriat village.

Meghalaya’s living root bridges are an engineering marvel made by the Khasi tribes, who guide the roots of rubber trees across rivers over decades. You will cross the famous Single Decker and the iconic Double Decker Living Root Bridge. Keep hiking, and your reward is a dip in the pristine, bright-turquoise waters of the Blue Lagoon, followed by the breathtaking Rainbow Waterfalls.

Day 5: Soaking in Sohra (Cherrapunjee Local)

After yesterday's massive trek, Day 5 is a bit more relaxed. We spend the day exploring the rest of Cherrapunjee’s wonders.

We will check out the panoramic views of the Seven Sisters Waterfalls, revisit any viewpoints you might have missed, and take a peaceful walk through the Eco Park. We'll also visit the Lyngksiar Waterfalls to just sit back, relax, and listen to the sounds of the jungle.

Day 6: Cleanest Village & Border Vibes (Cherrapunjee to Shnongpdeng)

Time to hit the road again! Our first stop is Mawlynnong, famously known as Asia’s Cleanest Village. The vibe here is incredibly peaceful, with beautiful flower gardens outside every bamboo house. We'll climb the Bamboo Sky View Point, check out the strange gravity-defying Balancing Rock, and see another beautiful root bridge.

By evening, we drive down to the India-Bangladesh border region to reach Shnongpdeng (near Dawki). Tonight, we camp by the riverside under a sky full of stars.

Day 7: The Adrenaline Rush (Shnongpdeng to Shillong)

Wake up early to experience the famous Umngot River. The water here is so clear that boats look like they are floating in the air! You can spend the morning doing water sports—kayaking, snorkeling, cliff jumping, or zip-lining across the river.

In the afternoon, we start our drive back to Shillong, but the fun isn't over. On the way, we stop at two of Meghalaya's most beautiful hidden gems: the bright blue Krang Suri Waterfalls and the majestic Phe Phe Waterfalls.

Day 8: Heading Home (Shillong to Guwahati)

All good things must come to an end. Enjoy your final breakfast in the hills before we drive you back down to the Guwahati Airport. You will be leaving with a phone full of incredible photos and memories that will last a lifetime.
