The Perfect 6-Day Meghalaya Road Trip: Caves, Root Bridges, and Crystal Clear Waters
If you are looking for a vacation that combines spiritual peace, epic waterfalls, and absolute natural beauty, you need to pack your bags for the Northeast. Meghalaya, known as the "Abode of Clouds," is a place that feels like it’s straight out of a fairy tale.
We’ve put together the ultimate 6-day itinerary that takes you from the bustling city of Guwahati deep into the magical forests and rivers of Meghalaya. Whether you are traveling with family or a group of friends, here is exactly how your week is going to look!
Day 1: Blessings and Beautiful Lakes (Guwahati to Shillong)
Your trip begins the moment you land at the Guwahati airport. Before we head up into the hills, we start the journey on a spiritual note with a visit to the powerful Maa Kamakhya Temple. It’s one of the most famous temples in India and the perfect way to kick off a good trip.
After taking blessings, we hit the road toward Shillong. The drive is incredibly scenic! If time permits, we will make a quick pitstop at Umiam Lake just before entering Shillong. It’s a massive, peaceful lake surrounded by pine trees—a great spot for your first vacation selfie. We’ll spend the night relaxing in Shillong.
Day 2: The Waterfall & Cave Trail (Shillong to Cherrapunjee)
Eat a good breakfast because today is packed with sightseeing! We are leaving Shillong and driving to Cherrapunjee (Sohra). On the way, we’ll stop at the famous Elephant Falls.
Once we reach Cherrapunjee, get ready to be amazed. We’ll explore the mysterious Arwah Cave and the famous limestone walls of Mawsmai Cave. You’ll also visit the Garden of Caves and take in the panoramic views from the Eco Park.
Of course, Cherrapunjee is all about waterfalls. We will show you the towering Nohkalikai Waterfall, the beautiful Wakaba Waterfall, and the magnificent Seven Sisters Waterfall. After a long, beautiful day, you’ll sleep soundly at your hotel in Cherrapunjee.
Day 3: The Ultimate Jungle Trek (Tyrna Village to the Root Bridges)
Put on your most comfortable walking shoes—today is an adventure! We drive down to Tyrna village, which is the starting point for one of the most famous treks in India.
You’ll hike down into the lush green valley to see the incredible Double Decker Living Root Bridge. These bridges aren't built; they are grown by the local Khasi tribes using the roots of rubber trees! Along the way, you’ll also cross a Single Decker Root Bridge.
If you push a little further, you’ll be rewarded with the bright, turquoise waters of the Blue Lagoon and the absolute magic of Rainbow Waterfalls. It’s a tiring day, but I promise it will be the highlight of your trip. We’ll head back to Cherrapunjee for the night.
Day 4: Clean Villages & Crystal Borders (Cherrapunjee to Shnongpdeng)
Today, we drive towards the India-Bangladesh border. Our journey takes us through Mawlynnong, famously known as Asia’s Cleanest Village. Here, you can walk up the Bamboo Bridge Viewpoint, marvel at the gravity-defying Balancing Rock, and see another beautiful Living Root Bridge.
Next, we head down to Dawki to see the Borhill Waterfall and the actual Bangladesh Border. But the real magic happens when we reach Shnongpdeng. This village sits right on the Umngot River, famous for water so clear that boats look like they are flying in the air! You will spend the night here, enjoying the peaceful riverside vibes.
Day 5: The Blue Waterfalls (Shnongpdeng to Shillong)
Say goodbye to the river, because we are heading back up to Shillong. But the sightseeing isn't over yet!
We are taking a route through the Jaintia Hills to visit two of the most stunning waterfalls in the state. First is the Krang Suri Waterfall, which has water so blue you’ll think someone painted it. Next is the majestic Phe Phe Waterfall, a hidden gem that drops beautifully into a deep pool. After soaking in these views, we’ll drive back to Shillong for your final night in the hills.
Day 6: Heading Home (Shillong to Guwahati)
Enjoy one last cup of local tea and a hearty breakfast. Today, we will pick you up from your hotel in Shillong and drop you off at the Guwahati Airport. You’ll be heading home with a full heart, tired legs, and a camera full of unforgettable memories.
